User-friendly displays at the David Crockett State Park Museum offer a glimpse of the wilderness that greeted settlers who came to this area as the Chickasaw Nation left it in 1816. Among them were David Crockett, who established a grist mill, powder mill, and distillery on Shoal Creek. Museum visitors can see a grist mill in action, powered by a working water wheel.

Other exhibits explore Crockett’s political life, which included Lawrence County’s first governing body, the Tennessee Legislature, and United States Congress. It highlights the feud that erupted between Crockett and Andrew Jackson over the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Jackson won that fight and the Trail of Tears was the result.
